Mind over matter?

I read a peanuts comic strip this week where Linus finds happiness in patting birds on the head and they like it too and his silly loud mouth sister Lucy says it's embarrassing for her that her brother pats birds on the head and when Charlie Brown tells Linus this he says "no one else does it".
That is so much like life. We don't do the things that make us happy or we stop ourselves from being happy because it isn't what everyone else does ; because it doesn't conform to what society expects ; because -"no one else does it"
And so, we find ourselves in jobs we don't like but we are in it because it pays the rent, or in relationships we don't find fulfilment in but we are in them because it's what is expected.
There is this constant struggle whether to  do the practical, rational thing or to break out of the mould, to ignore and be oblivious to what who will say about it and just be free.
The solution of it all is really like the quote in the picture -"the soul usually knows what to do to heal itself. The challenge is to silence the mind". When we are able to silence that deafening sound of the mind torturing us to 'do this' and 'don't do that' is when we will find peace.
